The Bad Boss

So, what do we do if we have one? After all, they still are “the boss.” We may feel our options are limited, trapped in a situation where our only option is to persevere. The mission of the Bad Boss Project is to understand the types and causes of bad bosses, and to identify and develop countermeasures - actions we can take to protect ourselves from the damage bad bosses create.

We are in the process of interviewing people who can share bad boss stories. Our goal is to develop a library of many hundreds of such stories that will form the empirical foundation for our research and upcoming book. We want your story as part of the library.

What is involved, you might ask. Just visit this page to submit a short 50-word summary of your story, and we will follow up by email. This may be followed by a zoom interview – typically 20-40 minutes – which we record. This interview will be analyzed and become part of our research database. Select stories will be featured anonymously in our books, blogs, or other publications. These stories may involve follow-up interviews to bring more life out of the story.

Concerned about backlash, being identified, or retaliated against? So are we. Who wants a lawsuit! Consequently, we are very careful to keep real names and companies out of our stories. For example, a Burger King restaurant in Indianapolis, Indiana may become a fast-food franchise in a large midwestern city. Our goal is to share an honest parable, not to expose bad bosses and their victims.

Help us fight back against the bad bosses of our world.

Almost everyone has had one. They can be anything from a bumbling well-meaning incompetent to malevolent. The damage they reap ranges from modest annoyance to total chaos that leaves broken people in its wake. In the course of our studies, we have encountered bad boss “survivors” who have abandoned promising careers, are suffering from symptoms of PTSD, and many who took years to get their careers – and self-esteem – back in balance. And that says nothing of the damage or lost potential a bad boss can create for their companies, suppliers, customers, and other stakeholders.
